So I was driving to work and KUOW was doing some stupid story so I flipped over to KEXP. I haven't been impressed very much with anything I've heard on there lately, but this morning they were playing a song with incredible delicacy and beauty. It reminded me of Mazzy Star or Mojave 3; it was slightly faster and not quite as spacey, but it created the same sort of emotional connection. It also had two moments that surprised and delighted me - one where the singers voice unexpectedly changed tone, one where the entire song shifted. There even was a clever musical joke where the guitarist played the riff from "I Shot the Sheriff" Fortunately they announced the artist and now 99 cents later on iTunes (well I had credit there from a gift card I received from buying Mel's iPod), it's mine. The Papercuts - John Brown. Maybe this will inspire me to buy the whole album, maybe not, but I'm on my 3rd listen now and it's still having the same effect on me. You have to love those flashes of musical clarity. (I can't get this embedded player to work, but maybe it'll do so for you. Could be our firewall...) Current Music: Papercuts - John Brown
