I missed the first game because I was seeing Bruce Hornsby but game two was this afternoon. We started out with no umpire (we played a rule where the batter got three swings) which worked to the advantage of the other team as their pitcher had a lot of problems with the strike zone. We borrowed an umpire at the end of 3 with Hobbytown leading 1-0. In the bottom of the 4th came the first game changing play. Two outs, a runners on second and third, a 2-2 pitch from me just barely missed for ball 3. Instead of a strikeout and the inning over, the next pitch was lined for a single. The following batter hit the ball an inch in front of home plate and our catcher threw it away. At the end of 4 it was 5-1. I led off the 5th with a walk and eventually scored. In fact we batted around scoring 5. We gave up the same tally in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-6 entering what would be the final inning. Again I led off with a walk. Again we batted around. This time we scored 6. There was the situation. We needed to get three outs before Hobbytown scored twice. Lead off batter singled right past me. If only my arms were a few inches longer. I came back though to strike out the next batter. After a pop up made the second out, we had a problem. Their power hitter was up representing the tying run. A suggestion was made to intentionally walk him but I was having none of that. I was going to arc the ball more and if he walked, he walked, but I was going to at least try. On a 2-0 count, he grounded to short. The throw to first was accurate and we jumped up and down. We defeated the top seed, a team that went 13-1-1. We're not out of the woods yet by any means but it was a great game. I've been asking myself a lot this year why I continue to play softball. My skills - never all that great to begin with - are fading and I wonder why I play a game where I'm not that much of a help. Today I remembered again. It was for games like this where I help bring a team to victory against a better team that make it all worthwhile. We might not win the championship but at least we had one shining moment. 0-1 2 BB 2 R. Pitching 0 BB 1 K Tags: softball
